This mixed media project analyzes the Elements and Principles of art while examining and distinguishing aspects of ourselves and embody that into a symbolic silhouette.

This silhouette will be repeated on each page, while a different set of Elements and Principles are emphasized and explored.

Here you can find easy access to a slideshow containing the criteria for each page of the book. Use this for reference as we work our way through the project.

Let's begin!

Learning Target:

I can discover and develop an original symbol, representing myself through the use of metaphor by analyzing aspects of my personality.

Before we start with the book making process, we must create our Symbolic Self. In other words, we need to find a symbol that represents individual selves. Click the link to the right to get started! Be sure to read the speaker notes a the bottom of the page to gather all information.

The Elements and Principles of Art

Before we start this project, we must ask:

What are the Elements and Principles of Art?

Principles

Elements

Basically, the Elements of art are the building blocks of all artwork and design.

And the Principles are the building! The Principles of art are a result of using the Elements efficiently. The Principles also help guide us to use the elements correctly!

Elements include Line, Color, Value, Shape, Form, Texture and Space.

Principles include Balance, Movement, Variety, Rhythm (aka repetition or pattern), Contrast, Emphasis, Proportion and Unity (aka harmony).

Why are the Elements and Principles important?

The Elements and Principles give us the language we need to discuss, analyze, interpret and engage with art.

No matter what, every artwork and design consists of one or more Elements and Principles of art.

We will be using line, repetition, and variety to fill in our first page.

Learning Target:

I can use LINE to emphasize my symbol by designing at least 3 repeated patterns that include various line weights while maintaining high quality craftspersonship.
